Janis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003 - the same year that Amy released her debut album, Frank. Winehouse’s mother, Janis, wanted to get her story on record while she was still able to. It was amazing for me to see him let his guard down when he realised he wasn't being judged. “He is a performer, a charming raconteur, and he and Amy were a proper double act when they were together. “To give Mitch space and hear from him in a way people haven't seen before was a pleasure,” says Parker. He said Kapadia had edited footage to make it look like he was in denial about the severity of his daughter’s drug and alcohol addictions, and that he should have done more to help her. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, had a breakdown after the release of Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning 2015 biopic, Amy, which he felt left viewers with the impression that he was “greedy and uncaring” and enjoyed the limelight too much. Parker says they’d reached the point where they all realised that “enough was enough” and it was time to remind the world that Amy was a real person, from “a very normal, North London family, who had a normal, loving childhood.” They had locked up a lot.”īut they, along with Winehouse’s family, felt that the complex and talented woman they knew had been reduced to “a caricature” of messy self-destruction. Not many 22-year-old girls are asked to prepare their friend’s body for its final journey or have their names inscribed on their friend’s headstone. “As very young women they had been traumatised by her dark, final years. “At first, her friends were wary of talking about Amy,” says the film’s director, Marina Parker. Mitch and Janis, who divorced when Amy was 10, share home movies of her happy early childhood but admit that, after Mitch moved out, she was quite a handful. Three of Amy’s closest friends, Catriona, Naomi and Chantelle, feature prominently in the film, and Catriona suggests that Amy may have been conflicted about her sexuality. Elsewhere, certain trigger points are identified - notably the death of Amy’s beloved nan Cynthia, in 2006, after which, at the height of her success, her life began to unravel due to her eating disorder and addiction problems.“Vulnerable… but not fragile. We want to celebrate Amy as the complex, incredible woman that she was." But the friends and family who knew her best and were with her until the end have a different story to tell. In Reclaiming Amy, Amy’s mum, Janis reveals: "After she died, her dad and I were accused of failing Amy. Reclaiming Amy - what family and friends reveal about Amy Winehouse
